Since 2017 Chipwrecked has been the world’s largest outdoor music festival dedicated to chiptune. It would have been great to have it neatly placed next to a major continental train station, but it just happened that instead we ended up on a farm outside Østerlars, Bornholm, a few kilometers from the best medieval round church on the island. Wait, island? Yes, like most of Denmark, Bornholm is an island, which complicates things but unless you are terrified of sea travel, not really that much. Also back up a little, outdoor? Yes, while there are bigger chiptune events, this is the only where the majority of visitors and artists live the real festival tent life for about three to five days and nights. Despite this, about a 100 people show up to play, dance, meet and be inspired, many of them from year after year.
There are two stages and each year about 30 artists have played for up to an hour each, meaning a pretty intense schedual starting right after noon and going on until midnight. In some way people have found time to sit down and hang out and make music together and for the last years there have been collaborations made and performed on the open stage on saturday afternoon. In addition to music there are workshops about making music or tinkering with electronics.
Although it is a camping festival, it is not completely without comforts. There is always breakfast, dinner and night fries served, and if there is enough kitchen staff maybe even lunch. Local draft beer, homemade wine ("wine" might be more appropriate) and soft drinks are available. If you need to shower there are warm water showers in Østerlars. If you really, really hate camping, Bornholm is littered with guest houses and hotels but we really recommend staying at the festival for as much as possible for the full experience!.
